Hand woven California White Sage bundles come in packs of two.

The tradition of using sacred sage to cleanse oneself, loved ones and the home of negative energies has been avowed since ancient times. White sage has been used in ceremonies for blessings of health and prosperity, banish spirits, and encourage protection.

The use of dried white sage is a 2,000 year old Indigenous American practice. The shamans used dried sage plants on their fires as a ritual of calling upon ancestral spirits. Any conflict, anger, illness or evil was absorbed by the sage smoke to be released or cleansed from the energy field of a person.

Healing Properties

Sage is used for healing. The smoke is used to bless, cleanse and heal the person or object being smudged. Sage is used to 'wash off' the outside world when one wishes to energetically cleanse their space or enters ceremony or other sacred space. Objects are likewise washed off with sage medicine smoke to rid them of unwanted influences.

Sage has been used for thousands of years for spiritual cleansing, communion and ritual. Smudging your sacred space, your home or office, and body with sage is comparable to taking an energetic shower, and participating in a deep metaphysical cleansing. The smoke from dried sage actually changes the ionic composition of the air, and can have a direct effect on reducing our stress response.

Smudging is ritual alchemy — changing and shifting the air element, and transforming our current experience to a mystical one.

The use of incense and other smoke and vapor to connect humans to the spirit world, can be easily traced throughout the East in parts of Asia and even dating as far back to Ancient Greece.

Some ideal (or necessary) times to sage smudge your aura and/or space would be:

  • When you feel lots of negative emotion
  • Are experiencing reoccurring overactive negative thoughts
  • After an argument
  • During any illness
  • Upon returning home from crowded situations
  • When you move into a new living space
  • When you begin a new job or start your own business
  • Before and after a guest enters your home
  • Before and after a yoga or healing session
  • Before, during or after meditation

Bonus Tip: After you light the sage, do not stop it from burning. The spirit of white sage knows just how much negativity or heaviness needs to be released and will burn accordingly. You can burn entire wands of sage in one sitting or it may stay 'lit' for only a minute or two. If you feel you are done burning sage, place the wand in a fireproof bowl or shell and allow the sage to cease burning naturally. If you watch the smoke, sometimes it will drift to a particular part of the room, car, or person - that is where the healing/protection energy is most needed.
